How to attract and retain brilliant Site Engineers

Here are some tips for groundworks and civils companies to recruit (and keep) a good Site Engineer so you can break an unhealthy dependency on agency Engineers.

You need……

A good working environment- A happy site team and with clearly defined job roles and expectations.

A decent website. It doesn’t need to be flashy, but it does need to be up-to-date and professional looking.

A good health and safety culture. A good Engineer will not be happy on a site where they feel like an accident is waiting to happen.

Robust systems and procedures for all your setting out activities. This sets clear expectations, which also protect the Engineer for being blamed for things which aren’t their fault.

Technical or mentoring support for Engineers when they need it. If you’re a small business and you don’t have this in-house, Setting Out For Construction can provide this.

A good training programme. Good Engineers want to keep learning and improving.

Clear career progression routes (which you honour –  If you make promises and don’t keep them, Engineers will just leave).

A proactive approach to recruiting, rather than a reactive one. This could include adding a ‘join us’ page to your website, regular sharing positive content about your company on social media or encouraging/ incentivising your existing employees to introduce people they know.
