Description
This one-day course is designed for surveyors who already understand the principles of traverse and can complete a manual traverse in the field or who have attended relevant training. The course focuses on using total station onboard software to plan, run, check and complete a full traverse efficiently while maintaining an understanding of the underlying survey principles.
Participants will be guided through the onboard traverse workflow and complete a full traverse from setup through to data export. The course also explains how onboard calculations relate to traditional traverse methods and how traverse workflows integrate with GNSS/GPS equipment.
Using onboard software can improve efficiency by reducing manual calculations, streamlining field workflows and providing immediate feedback on traverse quality while observations are being collected. By the end of the course, participants will be able to confidently complete a traverse using onboard software while applying survey judgement to validate results, investigate anomalies and maintain data quality.

You don’t need to attend all 4 courses in the same week, you can attend alternative courses in different week’s that are suitable.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
- Navigate and operate the onboard traverse program to complete survey workflows efficiently.
- Complete a full traverse workflow in the field using onboard software and equipment.
- Explain how onboard traverse calculations relate to manual traverse methods and principles.
- Interpret onscreen traverse results, indicators and quality outputs to assess survey confidence.
- Identify errors, anomalies and poor observations and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Set up, check and validate a backsight target over a known point.
- Verify traverse setup quality and troubleshoot common setup and observation issues.
- Explain the relationship between traverse workflows and GNSS/GPS survey methods.
- Export traverse data in a suitable format for use within survey processing software.
Prerequisites
Participants must have either:
- completed our 3-day Total Station Course; or
- completed our 1-day Traverse Course; or
- previously completed a manual traverse in the field.
This course assumes prior understanding of traverse principles, observations and coordinate calculation. Onboard software automates parts of the processing workflow but does not replace an understanding of traverse methodology or quality control. Participants should already be able to recognise whether results are reasonable, understand common sources of error and know when observations require checking or repeating. This prerequisite is intended to ensure that users can apply the software appropriately and avoid introducing or accepting errors without recognising them.
